GENERAL NEWS
23/06/2008 - PowerPoint Challenge

Take a good speech, add some powerful PowerPoint slides and what do you get? The answer is a terrific evening of top speeches and one winner. Gerard was fighting to retain this trophy - being the winner last year - but was pipped at the post by Frank who gave an outstanding performance. Congratulations to everyone who took part - there were some very different speeches and interpretations of the use of PowerPoint. Croydon are proud to lead in this field and to ensure that our club is suitable for all speakers from the social through to business.
09/03/2008 - District AGM & Finals

It was a great delight to see the work and enthusiasm of Croydon Speakers recognised at the District AGM. For the second year running, Croydon was awarded the Ace of Clubs. Keith Dickerson, the District President, reminded people that this was an award for innovation, creativitiy, support and generally providing a model environment for speakers. Of course this atmosphere is created not only by the senior members, but by everybody who attends. Croydon excels in providing excellent learning opportuities for speakers in a safe and inviting environment.
Both Ian Price and Margot Elder was jointly awarded the Trevor Havelock trophy. This magnificent award was presented by Christine Havelock and recognises the practical support given to other clubs, other speakers and to the District in general.
08/10/2007 - The Presidents Award
Simon has finally received his award - originally due at the end of last season. It was presented to him by Ian Price in recognition of loyal and active membership. Ian said that Simon represented the dependable, reliable and regular membership who could always be asked to undertake a role, who supported the club consistently and without whom the club would be so much poorer. Simon is a joy to listen to, adds a great deal to the evening and it is most fitting that his contribution has been recognized.
The new season alive and kicking!
The first couple of meetings of the new season have been a big success with so many new people joining us, a sign of a strong club! Whether you are new, or one of our established and experienced speakers, each meeting brings something more than a safe environment to learn and practice. We have some themed evenings, some different evenings with surprises along the way. What we will always strive to have is stimulating and positive evenings where the focus is on speaking, learning, and developing ourselves. Croydons Powerpoint Challenge
A very enjoyable evening was had by all on the 9th July. It was the Powerpoint Challenge and we had seven of the Area’s best speakers doing battle. What we got was seven very different speeches with different uses of the technical aspects. The variety, innovation, interest of the speeches was fantastic.
In the presence of the National President, the District President and the Area President, the competition was close; and a challenge to judge. In a move to demonstrate transparency of the judging process, there were two independent adjudications. The official judging and the audience judging. The latter agreed clearly with the former meaning that no one could leave feeling hard done by. The judging should be ,and was, honest and secondary to the occasion. The speeches took centre place and people will be talking about them for weeks to come.
Congratulations to Gerard Casale who took both trophies. A terrific speech enhanced by the use of PowerPoint in a style that complemented the presentation perfectly.

16/05/2007 - Sussex Pride Competion - Croydon are winners!

Congratulations to Frank, Ian, Olu and Ray, our winning team for the Sussex Shield Competition held at Redhill on the 16th May 2007. The theme for the competition was Local Pride and we had Frank telling us all about his pride in Penge. Ian's childhood rendition about the local pride we used to have about our streets, and Olu's pride in her new neighbourhood. And Ray keeping them all in check!
11/04/2007 - Surrey Shield Competion
The Surrey Shield was won this year by Sutton and City. The Croydon team did well and some say they were robbed! But it was a great experience for the team involved. An all girl team, lead by Margot with Darina and Anna.
03/02/2007 - Area Finals

Congratulations to Frank - the 2007 Southern Area Champion - Frank
won with a solid speech and goes forward to the District Final on
March 11th.
Congratulations to Dale as well. He will be joining Frank at the
District Finals as despite being in his first year with us, he
stormed to victory in the Topics competition and is the Southern Area
Topics champion.
Congratulations also to Margot who gave a strong speech, and who came
second in the Evaluation competition. It must have been very close
indeed. A very credible strong performance in two disciplines and she
will be there next time!
For Croydon to win two out of three events can only be good for the
club, and at last we are being recognised as the major player in our
District. We have a strong club, innovative ideas and will grow over
the next few months.
19/10/2006
At our last meeting two people were awarded their Interim Certificate. Congratulations to Stan Tseke and Margot Elder!
